Storybird QuickWrites

 Today we learnt about a great website called 'Storybird.com'.

We are going to use this once a week for digital quickwrites, as not everyone in our class has success with writing with a pencil or pen... we find it easier on a device.

The topic for this week was: "There's a monster in my...".  Everyone in class had the same 100 words to use.  Some of us struggle to find the words to use when we have to write - this was great because the words were already there for us... we just had to create our own response.

Those of us who love to write found it exciting and a challenge - because some words that we wanted to use weren't there.  We had to think really hard about how we put the words together.

A tip we learnt was that each line should make sense on it's own.
We found out that reading our work out aloud to ourselves helped us hear when we should use a new line.
We also realised that we can create impact by having short lines and long lines!

We had some fantastic output - that really painted a picture for our audience.

Graffiti: Art or Vandalism?

Our Huia reading group was given an interesting question from Koka Ngaire... is Graffiti Art or Vandalism? We read a couple of L4 texts and looked at a video about the history of graffiti and we had to form our opinion from these and our prior knowledge. We all came to the conclusion that it depends.  It depends where it is and what the message is...  WHAT DO YOU THINK?  We would love to hear your feedback in the comments. How to keep your Blogger password safe

Giving computer or password-management advice to people who don't have lot of experience with IT has always been challenging: there is a lot of background information that you need to know before it all starts to make sense. And eaching colleagues to use a mouse back in the 1990s was a lot easier than explaining on-line services and security is in the twenty-teens!  I know that I'm not the only person who struggled to explain the difference between email and gmail to someone who just didn't understand " gmail is one type of software for doing emails " - he just kept asking "so what does fmail do?"
